PEPA acknowledges the federal mandate requiring the construction of a filtration plant and supports its construction on the parcel that the Westchester Joint Water Works owns and purchased for this purpose. However, their proposed site application at the Westchester County Airport involves the removal of 6 acres of forest, an area they do not presently own, and building within the protected Kensico Watershed. To build at the Airport requires permission from the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL). They are holding a meeting for input from constituents that will influence how they vote.

How Can You Participate? Attend the Westchester County Board of Legislators Public Listening Session on Thu., February 15th at 7 p.m.either remote via WebEx, or in-person.
What: Public Listening Session concerning the proposed location of a critical water treatment facility. Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) is seeking county approval for a land exchange transaction.

When: Thu. February 15th, at 7 p.m.
Why: Constructing the filtration plant is imperative to meet safe drinking water standards mandated by state and federal laws. However, the crucial decision lies in determining its precise location.
Advocates including PEPA, Purchase Friends, Airport Coalition, Sierra Club, and others, support building the facility on WJWW's existing property, outside the Kensico Reservoir watershed, rather than on airport property that is currently undeveloped, forested green space. Therefore, we urge the BOL to oppose the land swap proposal.
