CALL FOR BOARD MEMBERS & VOLUNTEERS

Purchase Environmental Protective Association (PEPA)
seeks its next generation of Board Leadership

Join community leaders who bring vision, dedication, and energy to making a difference in our Purchase community now and into the future. We welcome volunteers to work in various capacities, including those listed below.

Board of Directors: Board members serve three-year terms. Roles and responsibilities generally require 1 to 5 hours per month per month and include:

  • Managing strategic direction of our organization
  • Increasing the visibility of our work
  • Attending Quarterly Board Meetings (including Annual Meeting)
  • Supporting Fundraising to achieve financial stability goals
  • Engaging on one or more specific topics

For those interested in volunteering who may not feel ready to accept a Board level commitment, we have positions available for Volunteers.

Airport Initiative: tasked with ensuring that there is no expansion of the airport, we work with the Coalition to Prevent Expansion at the Westchester Airport, the Westchester County Executive’s Office, and the county government, including the Legislators, and Airport Advisory Board, to minimize noise and environmental impacts of the airport.

The Kensico Watershed Protection (KWP) Initiative: working with other KWP Coalition members, including the Purchase Quakers, this group is focused on preserving and protecting the water quality of Kensico Reservoir and contending that it makes no sense to construct a large industrial plant in the watershed location proposed by Westchester Joint Water Works. We advocate it should be built instead on a nearby parcel WJWW already owns (away from Purchase Street and outside of the Reservoir Boundary that is on Airport property).

Social Media & Marketing Initiative:  we are seeking influencers who can assist in our publicity and community relations' efforts by spreading the word by forwarding our email newsletters and posting on our robust social media network. Check out our key links below.

Mission

PEPA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environment and preserving the character of our unique community. We strive to protect our community from harmful development that threatens not only the quality of life Purchase offers but could also result in tax increases and significant damage to property values.

About

The Purchase Environmental Protective Association (PEPA) roots can be traced back to 1914. It was established by concerned citizens living in Purchase who sought to protect the public's well-being by balancing priorities for land preservation with strategies for managing local development. For more than 108 years, PEPA has worked to protect the rural character of Purchase by being a vocal voice advocating for community and all it encompasses.

By monitoring development proposals and informing the public on local environmental issues facing Purchase and the local area, PEPA's involvement and documentation of the historical, cultural, and natural features of its unique landscape serve as a vital resource to the community. PEPA routinely attends relevant monthly meetings for the

  • Westchester County Airport Advisory Board
  • Westchester County Board of Legislators
  • Harrison Town Board & Planning Committee Meetings
  • Westchester Joint Water Works Board
  • Coalition to Prevent Expansion at the Westchester Airport

By having a presence at such forums, PEPA can effectively represent our mission and influence decision-making accordingly. PEPA also shares knowledge gained from these meetings and informs the public about relevant local issues, legislation, and policies by disseminating information through our website, newsletter, and other informative publications and mailings. We conduct appropriate research and hire professional experts as necessary to provide relevant information to the community and local governing bodies.  Also, we create opportunities to bring together PEPA members and Purchase neighbors with local officials and community organizations at our annual meeting and other special events.

Financial Support

In closing PEPA is calling on the residents of Purchase to join as a community to protect our common environmental, public safety and health interests. Your  financial support ensures that our work to promote and protect this unique Purchase landscape legacy continues. PEPA is a New York non-profit corporation and is a federal 501 (c) 3 charitable organization. Your tax-deductible gift is essential and makes a true difference in PEPA’s ability to protect our community.

Thank you for reading our bulletin. By becoming involved in a leadership role at PEPA you will have a significant impact on the ever-changing challenges of planned growth, conservation of open space, and protection of the environment in Purchase.

As the former Executive Director at PEPA, and current Secretary tothe Board, I would be delighted to speak with you to share more details, and answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Anne Gold
